Things We Weren't Meant to Know by Haleine
Rating: Adult
Progress: Completed
Summary: When a line of inquiry leads the Doctor and Martha into the inner sanctum of a great and famous scientist, through his works and his life story, they begin to realise that there are simply some stories that the two of them are not supposed to hear.

Story Recs:  This is a gorgeous romance story between the Doctor and Martha.  I don't usually prefer Martha as my leading lady in the romance department, but this one is written so beautifully, I just fell in love with it.  It's very much a hurt/comfort fic and Martha, once again, saves the day.  I specificially love the true emotional angst this story gives and the wonderful timey-wimey stuff that could be confusing, but isn't at all.  It's just gorgeous.

Progress:  Complete
Summary:  She gave a strangled sob and launched herself at him, pounding her fists into his chest. He let her. He let her cry and hit him and fling curses at him. He let her call him a coward and a traitor.

Rec Notes:  This is a lovely angsty one-shot.  I love that it's so short, and yet, so filled with such emotion and hurt and anger.  It's lovely.

Sense by Adaliazandra
Rating:  Teen
Progress:  Complete
Summary:  One by one they left him, increasingly cut off, alone, in the silence and the dark, until only touch remained… touch, and pain.

Rec Notes:  The Doctor gets his senses cut off one at a time, leaving him withdrawn and unable to communicate, stuck in the horrors of his own mind, while Rose and Jack have to simply watch him suffer without a means to help him.  In fact, they are forced to do the unimaginable while he is defenseless.  It's very angsty, and terrible to witness the Doctor go through the pain - but it's gorgeously written.  A wonderful hurt/comfort fic, and I really do love the way it ends.  It feels like you, the reader, have gone through the journey with them, and by the time you finish, you feel exhausted.  But it's wonderfully worthwhile.  And then there is a sequel, Sense, Timestamped, that is a lovely ending to the story.

Spiral

Summary:  AU after the kiss in Parting of the Ways, Jack and Rose are left to carry on alone.

Rec Notes:  This is a very dark and angsty fic, which I love (grins).  Jack is beautifully portrayed and Rose is very much in need of help.  Highly recommend.

Ninth Doctor / Jack

Deal
by Yamx
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Complete
Summary:  This series starts a few hours after "The Doctor Dances" and shows the development of the relationship between Jack and the Doctor. Centers on the two of them, Rose, and the TARDIS, but includes appearances by other characters, e.g. Jackie Tyler and the Tenth Doctor.

Rec Notes:  I love the angst of this series, and the way that the author writes Jack and the Doctor's relationship.  Jack really is good for the Doctor, and vice-versa.  I really like how Rose is portrayed - obviously, this is a slash fic and not a three-some fic, but I think the author writes Rose as being loved and a part of the trio without her coming across as the third-wheel.  It's very sexy and very angsty, and I was really blown away by it.

Tenth Doctor / Jack

Terminal Decay by Unslinky
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  WIP
Summary:  Set shortly after The Planet of the Dead. AU to everything Doctor Who and Torchwood after that.

Rec Notes:  How to even begin to describe this story?  I was even hesitant to put this in a "ship" as there are so many characters, and so many relationship, that it's almost an impossible story to categorize.  This is a very, very, very novel-length fic, it's very dark, it's very angsty, it's very tortured Doctor... It is the epitome of a hurt/comfort fic, as the hurting and the comforting NEVER end.  I love Unslinky's writing - and she is honestly one of the only authors I've come across that has more dedication to her work than anyone.  It's incredible.  Every day there are new chapters, it just continues and is amazing.  Terminal Decay is EPIC and it's very AU.  It has the entire Doctor Who cast in it, and they all play a major part.  Even Alt! Ten and Rose are major characters.  There are OC characters that are written fantastically, and it is just brilliant how well she juggles everyone and keeps the plot twists coming and going and the individual character's emotional journeys.  It really is something to behold.  It's a very painful story, so be brave because it's completely worth it.  I chose to put it in the 10/Jack ship because that's the ship that you just keep rooting for, and seriously want to have happen.  Although, if the 10/Jack ship isn't your thing - you should still read it, because all ships are there.

Courting by Sykira
Rating:  Teen
Progress:  WIP series, completed individual stories
Summary:  The Doctor and Donna embark on a slow and respectful progression in their relationship, to something more than friends.

Rec Notes:  This is one of those fics that seems to be stolen from the Austen genre a bit, without it being period.  It's very romantic, very innocent, and just ultimately fluffy.

Only Human
by Sykira and LouieCat
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Complete
Summary:  Donna is captured into servitude on an alien planet. Doctor/Donna romance implied.

Rec Notes:  The Doctor has to save Donna after she's captured and put into slavery.  It's been a long time for her, and she's very ill and doesn't believe that the Doctor, or her travels with him are real.  Earth is a dream and this is a lovely fic about the Doctor earning back her trust in order to rescue her.  It's a fic about building trust and obviously a hurt/comfort fic.  The portrayal of how gentle the Doctor is with Donna is beautifully written and is one of my favorites because he obviously cares so much for her - if only she would believe he is who he says he is.

Prophecy and Change
by Sykira
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Complete
Summary:  My first long story, it's dark, "shag or die” angsty and uncomfortable, and possibly triggery in a dubcon way.

Rec Notes:  Who doesn't love a "Shag or Die" fic?  This one is my favorite, mainly because the Doctor is so romantically gentle.  I love the way he treats Donna and I love how Donna keeps warming up to him.  Trust is a huge part of this fic, and Sykira does such a lovely job at making it emotionally uplifting despite the angst of the story.  It's beautiful - it's got Jack and Martha as supporting characters, and I just love this story.  It's definitely one that I keep going back to on a rainy day and it always makes me feel wonderful by the time I reach the end.  This is the first story of the Prophecy and Change series, and although there are several stories, and each is completed, I would still consider the series a WIP.  There is so much unexplored still and so much that I want to happen - I hope the author continues the series and gives us more of this universe to play around in.  But if you haven't read it - this is a must-read.

Somnolence by Sykira
Rating:  Teen
Progress:  Complete
Summary:  Set in the time between defeating the enemy in JE and returning to the parallel universe. Contains spoilers up to the end of season 4 only.

Rec Notes:  I love how the Doctor cares for Donna in this story.  It feels sexual, without the sex.  It is gorgeously written and deals with the Time Lord mind in Donna's head, and the complications it causes her.  I love this fic, mainly because there are so few stories out there that give the Doctor and Donna a real chance to get together.  Yes, canon shows that they are only friends, but what's great about fanfiction is it can take those characters an extra step and if it's done right, it's very romantic and believable.

A Different Kind of Adventure by Tardisblue
Rating:  All Ages
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Rose and her journey with the Doctor and dyslexia.

Rec Notes:  This is just a very sweet fic about Rose finally admitting to the Doctor that she has difficulty reading, and his reaction to that.  I really love the Doctor in this, and although it's not very long, it is quite adorable.  And there is Harry Potter, which makes it even better.  *grins*

All That You Have Is Your Soul by Zweee
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  WIP
Summary:  Rose gets lost. After living a nightmare for over a year the Doctor finds her again. But sometimes the healing can be worse than the trauma. As Rose tries to put her life back together the Doctor deals with the guilt of not finding her sooner.

Rec Notes:  Okay - this is a dark fic.  Rose gets captured on a planet and is forced into slavery.  It deals with rape, and being a victim.  The Doctor rescues Rose and is doing his best to heal her.  This is sadly a WIP, but the angst and the scenes that are there are just beautifully tragic.  Much angst and yes, this story does deal with Rose getting hurt in a way that makes a lot of people uncomfortable.  I appreciate this fic because it doesn't focus on what happened, rather, what happens after the fact and how one copes and deals with such personal tragedy.  It is a healing fic and I think that's very important in writing this kind of story.  Take note of the warnings - it might not be your thing.  But I enjoy dark fics, and so you might as well.

Chaosverse
by earlgreytea68
Rating:  Adult (some are All Ages, some are teen - but some are adult, so I'll just give it an overall rating of Adult)
Progress:  Completed, but hopefully there will be more.  :)
Summary:  There are honestly so many different stories that make up this series, it's impossible to summarize, unless you summarized each individual fic, and as it's already done in the Chaosverse Chronology, I'm not going to do it here.  The Chronology puts the stories in order as to read them, but I will admit that two or three of the links are "iffy" and you will probably have to google the correct section of the story to begin with.  As it's only available via livejournal to read, and there are many chapters to some of the stories - just be careful about making sure you start at the beginning of each story.  Everything is very clearly labelled, and I made it through, so I'm 100% positive you will be able to sort it out as you go as I did.

Rec Notes:  To me, this is the most EPIC, the most beautiful, the BEST of Doctor Who fanfiction that is available.  Earlgreytea68 has created a universe that gives the Doctor a family - he's not alone anymore, and it's the most brilliant thing ever imagined.  There is angst and wonder and emotion and everything wonderful that makes reading worthwhile, and if you ever ready anything of Doctor Who fanfiction - make this it.  The standard has been set, and it's breathtaking.  I adore the Doctor and Rose's relationship, I love how the Doctor is characterized.  I love how it remains true to canon, even though it's not.  This is the first story where I care as much as or even more about some of the OC characters than I do the canon characters.  Brem might just be my favorite character in fanfiction ever, and I was shocked at that discovery.  Go read this.  Seriously.  Go now.  And prepare yourself, because it will be a very good, very long, and very worthwhile read.

Cloisters by Wildwinterwitch
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  The TARDIS is dying. She forces the Doctor to make an emergency landing on the planet Ruul. With no cure readily available, all Rose and the Doctor can do is try to settle down and build a new life.

Rec Notes:  I love the storyline where the Doctor and Rose are forced to live like the natives.  This is a very sweet, very angsty, and very romantic story.  It feels slightly fairy-tale and the author's use of description is lovely.  There is also some beautiful artwork for the fic.

Cold Comfort by Catharticone
Rating:  Teen
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  The Doctor had his back turned, so he didn't see how badly Rose's hands shook as she wrapped them around the thick mug.

Rec Notes:  This story is gorgeous.  Of course, it's angsty (most of the fics that I recommend are, because I'm twisted - I give no excuses).  Something horrible happens and Rose doesn't understand what's happening to her, and the Doctor is too busy with the TARDIS to notice until it's almost too late.  The Doctor figuring it out is just lovely - he very much takes care of Rose and comforts her.  The epitome of hurt/comfort and I adore it.

Curb Appeal by Sonic Jules
Rating:  All Ages
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Ten and Rose... Always expect the unexpected. Accidents do happen. Anytime. Anywhere. Even when you're home. Seven chapters total.

Rec Notes:  A Doctor/Rose friendship hurt/comfort.  Rose is badly injured and the Doctor has to care for her.  I just really like the way that it's written in Rose's POV with the Doctor carrying her and fixing her.  It's very romantic, even if it's only a friendship fic.

Feast by jinni
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Some phrases seem to transcend time and space as Rose is about to find out.

Rec Notes:  This is the best oral "shag or die" fic out there.  It's unbelievably sexy and hot.  My only complaint is that there isn't a part 2.

Goodnight by Candlefly
Rating:  All Ages
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  The Doctor reflects on a small ritual that he and his companion Rose have in their friendship. When she is exhausted from one of their missions of mercy, he tries to give her rest and sees again how comforting a ritual can be.

Rec Notes:  This is a very sweet one-shot where the Doctor gets to act more like a father-figure to Rose rather than a love interest.  I think it's lovely.

Matchmaker, Matchmaker by Jinni
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  The Doctor and Rose find themselves forced to get to know one another in all sorts of ways.

Rec Notes:  The Doctor and Rose are kidnapped by matchmaking aliens.  What could be better?  This is a hopelessly romantic and smutty fic, and definitely a "aliens make them have sex" kind of story, but it's extremely well-written, very emotionally churning, and a lovely roller coaster of lust vs. love and exploring the more physical aspects of the Doctor and Rose once they admit to their feelings for one another.  It's very hot, very kinky, and it's got all of the great cliche's all in one, from aphrodisiac fruit to handcuffs.  You will enjoy it!

Skin Deep by Catharticone
Rating:  Teen
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Rose and the Doctor struggle with the aftermath of her experience as a captive on a harsh, unforgiving planet.

Rec Notes:  This is a Rose/Doctor friendship fic and it beautifully captures Rose getting hurt and the Doctor being there for her and healing her.  He is so gentle with her and eases her into admitting to him what happened during her capture so well.  I really do love it.

Some Slightly Unusual Mistakes
by Rallalon
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Because playing with cliches is fun.

Rec Notes:  I adore this trilogy.  It's sexy, it's fun, and it's romantic.  The Doctor is hilarious and I love the misunderstandings - it makes for a good romance story.

The Calm Before the Storm
by Kalleah
Rating: Adult
Progress: Completed
Summary: This is the story of a journey for the Doctor and for Rose, as the Doctor comes to terms with his guilt and her mortality and lets go of guards and walls long built up. This is a story of a yearning for deeper meaning even when the mind rejects its validity.

Rec Notes: This is a story in The Process of Becoming series. "Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death." - Anais Nin

I particularly wanted to recommend The Calm Before the Storm because it is my favorite of the series, although I will also recommend Voyages of Discovery as it's heartbreakingly beautiful and has an ending that really was surprisingly lovely. What can I say about Kalleah's writing? It's slow-moving, taking time to write each necessary detail to paint a glorious universe that one seems to take a deep breath in and calm down. It's completely lovely and poignant and beautiful. Her characterization of the Doctor is one that I've fallen in love with - he's wise and old and yet, still Ten in that wonderfully open slightly eccentric way. She captures Rose in a more mature way that I've seen in other fics, giving her the knowledge to understand the Doctor in a way that no one else is able to, and yet - there is still so much about him that is unknown to her, and it's very much a story about her discovery of who he is and who they can be together. There is an OC character that I love almost as much as I love Wilfred and in the end, it's wonderful that the Doctor has someone other than Rose to call a friend. I had never imagined the Doctor with a bunch of monks, but it's such a magnificent story that you will be amiss if you don't go and read it right now. This story can be read alone, but my recommendation is that you begin with To Be Human, which is a one-shot that sort of jump-starts the series.

Vision by Darcie
Rating:  All Ages
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  When one sense fades, the others are said to sharpen. But will that be enough as the Doctor and Rose face a distressing situation?

Rec Notes:  I really love this story.  The Doctor gets blinded and Rose has to save the day.  I love the Doctor needing to depend on Rose, and I really love Rose stepping up and being able to take care of the Doctor.  I love the twist at the end and the Doctor's reaction when he discovers something.  I love angsty fics and especially fics where the Doctor needs help without being portrayed as "weak".  The characterization is great, the plot is interesting, and this is one of my favorite Rose fics.

Rec Notes:  One of the darkest fics I've ever read.  This one is heartbreaking, angsty, tortured, and amazing.  I was completely blown away by it.  The way it's written, the use of description and emotion.  Having the Doctor be so... cruel, to be kind is gutwrenching.  It's gorgeous.  Prepare yourself before you read it.  It's difficult, but very much worth it in the end.

Rec Notes:  This has to be my favorite one-shot ever written.  Yes, Ten is in it at the beginning, but it is definitely a Nine/Rose fic.  It's completely lovely and angsty and heart-wrenching and wonderful.  Read it - it won't disappoint.

In Human Hands
by Rallalon
Rating: Teen/Adult
Progess:  WIP
Summary: “I’m Rose,” she says, stresses the second word as if she thinks he might be slow or as if she thinks he needs reminding of a crucial fact. It does sound like a reminder. Maybe she said before and he forgot. He’s not very good with names.  “John Smith,” he replies.

Rec Notes: This is one of those fics that I started and I wasn't sure if I would like it, based on the fact that it's a chameleon arch fic (or so I assume). I could not have been more wrong. By chapter 4, I was completely hooked. It is in the POV of John Smith and takes place in Barcelona (the city, not the planet). It's a mystery fic, and Rallalon is the best at allowing the reader the time to figure things out as John does. It is a WIP, disappointingly, but it is still worth the read. The characterizations in the story are some or the most realistic I've ever read, the pacing is alarmingly spot-on, and the emotion the story produces are humbling. This is one of those fics that you don't know what you are missing until after you've read it. It's one of the most amazing stories out there, which is saying a lot considering that it isn't finished yet. Even so, don't let that dissuade you - you will be blown away by the prose and amazed that such a story exists.

Summary:  On the planet Tombstone, Rose is stung by an insect and the Doctor is forced to lie about their relationship in order to be permitted to treat her. Unfortunately, the lie leads to much more than he bargained for.

Rec Notes:  Hurt/Comfort fic with an added twist.  Sexy and romantic and I love how the Doctor cares for Rose.

Same As Always by Ralallon
Rating:  Adult

Summary:  In which much sexual tension is generated and resolved between Rose and the Ninth Doctor.

Rec Notes:  I will read anything that Ralallon writes - it is all brilliant, and this is no exception.  It's hot and sexy and HOT.

by Doctorsdiva

Showtime
by Jinni
Rating:  Teen
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Rose, Jack, and the Doctor find themselves in a situation. Can Rose and the Doctor save the day or is it up to Captain Jack to pull through in the end?

Rec Notes:  This fic actually made me laugh.  It's very humorous and sarcastic as it makes fun of cliche fics.  I love it.  The Doctor and Rose "pretending" to make love gets me every time.

Strange Magicks
by Lillibet
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  The moment the Doctor and Rose admit their true feelings is the moment that fate conspires against them; forcing the Doctor to place his trust in the ability of others, choose to believe in the power of strange magicks and be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice – or risk losing Rose, forever.

Rec Notes:  One of the most amazing romance stories out there.  I love the slow buildup.  I love the OC characters.  I love the planet they get caught up in.  The angst is brilliant.  There is one scene in particular, without giving too much away, where the Doctor pushes Rose away that just breaks my heart and fills me with such longing... It's beautifully written and you must read it!

Suicide Blonde by RabidRaeann
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary: The Doctor meets Rose Tyler for the first time, but it’s long after she first met him.

Rec Notes:  This is a scene from the Disheveled series, and this scene is amazing.  The series is amazing, but this scene in particular is brilliant.  It is hot and sad and sexy and needy and passionate.  I heart this fic.

The F*cklet Universe
by Lillibet
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Smut, smut and more smut. Did I mention there's smut?

Rec Notes:  Every single fic here is brilliant.  It's so much more than smut, and the stories are filled with passion and angst and hotness.  My favorites of the series has to be Time is Not a Straight Line, Modesty ForbidsHeart Shaped, Out of the Woods, and Rain Soaked.  All of these stories can be read as one-shots.  However, they are amazing if read in order.

The Ragged Edge
by Jonquil
Rating:  All Ages
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  He is but mad north-north west.

Rec Notes:  I prefer novel-length stories to one shots.  And this is a very, very short one-shot.  And it blew me away.  It's poignant and beautiful and sad and you must go read it.

Time To Spare by Doylefan22
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Killing two challenges with one stone. Firstly evenstar_estel wanted a fic that included the line 'Trust me, I'm a Doctor' from Chris' interview and the notion that the Doctor's two hearts speed up his recovery time. Secondly lovepollution wanted a fic with the Doctor and Rose trapped in a pitch dark room.

Rec Notes:  Nine and Rose trapped in a dark room.  Whatever will they do?  A bit of angst, a bit of waiting, and a lot of... touching.  Very nice fic.

Warmth
by Darcie
Rating:  Teen/Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Cold can kill. Can warmth heal?

Rec Notes:  I adore hypothermia fics.  LOL.  This one is brilliant.

Wrapped Up In You by Jessa L'Rynn
Rating:  Adult
Progress:  Completed
Summary:  The one thing Rose forgot - the only thing - was that where there's truth - the Doctor actually needing to sleep, for example - there are also consequences.

Rec Notes:  Brilliant and gorgeous.  I fell in love with this fic right away.

Wounded
by Ponygirl

Progress:  Completed
Summary:  Rose's innocence is lost. Can she and the Doctor put the pieces back together? Dark. Seriously, folks.

Rec Notes:  Hurt/Comfort to it's finest.  I love this fic.  It's dark and sad and gorgous.  I love how the Doctor cares for Rose and is there for her in the ways she needs him to be.

I love reading - it's my thing.  If I can get my hands on it, I'll read it.  I'm a very open-minded reader and enjoy writer's taking me to new places and exploring different personalities of characters I love.  Fanfiction is something I've been heavily immersed in for longer than I'd like to admit, and it's something that I'm very grateful for as it's allowed me that creative outlet my imagination craves in which to run wild. In Doctor Who timelines, I'm a relatively new fan, as I was only introduced to it about two years ago.  It's amazingly been one of those things that captured me from the moment the Doctor first grabbed Rose's hand and said the infamous, "run."  Ever since, I've been... well, obsessed seems to be the only accurate term in which to describe my fascination with the entire Whoverse.  Since then, I've also discovered Torchwood, and of course - the natural progression of any fan for the stories was to seek out the multitudes of fanfiction available online.

As an avid Harry Potter fanfiction reader, I was already familiar with how to find stories and where to search them out.  Much to my dismay, however, many of the fics that were "popular" and "can't live without reading" were near impossible to find unless you knew about them.  Of course, there is always FFNet and Teaspoon, but what really would have helped in the beginning was some sort of MasterList in which to give me a good idea as to where to begin.  To lead me in the right direction.

So I wanted to create this list as a helpful guide in exploring the world of DW fanfiction, as I wish I had access to something like this when I was searching out "the greats".  *grins*  Also, I thought it might be nifty to have a place I could come back and re-read, instead of having to search for that fic I loved that I read that one time but can't remember the author or title.  (Because yes, I am horrible about remembering the important stuff) Most of the fics listed are Adult - I don't recommend anyone underage reading the majority of these fic recs.  Don't worry - they'll still be around in a few years.

As I said before, I am a very open-minded reader, and that means that a lot of what I enjoy tends to lean toward the more adult topics.  You've been warned!  I'll use Teaspoon's rating system of Adult, Teen, and All Ages (although I can't imagine there are many recommended in the All Ages category, but I'm sure there are a few).  I've also included author summaries, as well as the links to all stories.  The "Rec Notes" are my own personal opinions and why I think you should read each fic. Hopefully, this list will continue to grow and encourage more readers to become writers - because there is honestly never enough stories out there. All in all - enjoy, and I hope this helps!
